How to Make a Origami Batman Symbol

These cute Batman and Robin characters are based on the Lego Batman Movie. I adore making things from paper rolls, and couldn't resist creating these cute super heroes by upcyling the rolls with some paint and a bit of felt for the capes.

Our whole family loved watching The Lego Batman movie on our weekly family movie night. My husband is the biggest batman fan in the house, so he may have even loved if more than the kids!

Not long ago I crafted a Batmobile from an upcycled cereal box and duct tape, and it looked very lonely without a Superhero to keep it company. Note that this paper roll Batman and Robin don't actually fit in the car, but they do look cool standing next to it.

How to create Lego Batman paper roll characters

You will need:

• two paper towel rolls
• acrylic paint (I always use Jo Sonjas acrylic gouache – not sponsored)
• felt in yellow and black
• scissors and paint brushes

How to:

Flatten your cardboard roll and sketch a rough outline of the top of the head of each character. Cut this out whilst the roll is flattened and then pop back into the rounded shape.
You will now have a double shape (meaning Batman has four ears and Robin has two fringes). Trim the back one off, leaving only the one fringe and pair of ears.
Sketch in the details of each character. I printed out some images I found online to use as a guide, but you can just use my finished characters as a guide.
Paint the details in in the appropriate colours and allow to dry.
Make the capes. To create these sketch a half shape of a simple cape against a fold on a piece of paper. The cape should be approximately 2/3 the size of your character. You can use the same template for both characters capes, only Batman's has semicircles along the bottom. Cut the shape out and unfold and you will now have a symmetrical looking cape. Place the base of your cardboard roll character over the end where the head goes and trace around it to get the exact shape you need for the head hole. You can now use this template to create your cape from felt by attaching it with pins and cutting around it.
When your character is dry, place the cape over the head. It should be a snug fit since you traced around the base to get the exact shape.
